The 1980's were a wild ride for car carrier companies. The Motor Carrier Act of 1980 opened up shippers and routes to all comers bringing many more companies, some as small as 1 man/1 truck, into the business. The Surface Transportation Act of 1982 increased the size and weight allowed at the cost of higher taxes.
Most importantly, foreign car makers like Volkswagen and Nissan opened manufacturing plants in the U.S., greatly expanding the carrier business especially in the South. Peterbilt developed the Model 379 in the mid-1980's and today it still defines classic long-nose conventional styling. It was available with a wide range of suspensions, making it the most desirable car carrier of its time.
